Safelite Auto Glass declared, during the weekend, the start of a new wide-scale window recycling program for the company. Safelite expects the program to save 12-15 million tons of material.
Window recycling is a natural progression in our attempts to be an environmentally viable company, as a part of our corporate responsibility standards," announces Safelite speaker Melina Metzger. "We really began negotiating the provisions of our contract with our recycling partner back in September 2010. While we hit some roadblocks at first in implementing the programme, we are pleased to be moving forward."
Safelite plans to have an expanding roll-out of the programme starting on the East Coast.
"Our Braselton Center was first to begin the collection process in December 2011," says Metzger. "So far, we've rolled it out to 42 % of our East Coast marketsbeginning with markets nearest to the recycling plant and expanding outward every week."
Safelite will be collecting old windows and shipping to a recycling plant thru existing freight lanes. Additionally, the company is recycling wooden pallets utilized in glass distribution and using as mulch. The pallet nails are also being captured and sold as a low-end recycled metal.
In parent organization Belron's July 2011 Company Responsibility Report a goal was set to reduce the amount of glass it sends to landfills to 0 by 2015. At the time of the report Belron was recycling 58 % of windshields it replaced. Tags: safelite, zipglass.com. newwindshields.com
